One of the wonderful features of the Huddle is the ability to connect in groups for peer learning. Groups are commonly organized by state, by shared interest or initiatives pursued, by the type of organization leading your community coalition and by shared community characteristics. The Arkansas Grade-Level Reading Campaign’s work to reduce the number of young students who repeatedly miss school and to increase reading proficiency is a statewide effort involving prominent state players — for good reason. “The ultimate goal is to impact statewide policy, practice and thinking,” explains Angela Duran, the coordinator of the Arkansas campaign, which is statewide but includes five “community solutions initiative sites.”Read more…

Between 2012 and 2013, the percentage of chronically absent students plummeted in New Britain’s 10 elementary schools – for kindergartners, from 30 to 18 percent; first graders from 24 to 13 percent; second graders from 19 to 14; and third graders from 15 to 11 percent.Read more…

The Wish You Well Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations that promote family literacy in the United States. The focus of the Foundation’s grantmaking is on the development and expansion of new and existing literacy and educational programs. Grants generally range from $2,000 to $10,000. Requests may be submitted at any time and are reviewed four times per year.Read more…

Currently, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which supports literacy programs in communities served by Dollar General in 40 states, is accepting grant requests through their Youth Literacy Grants program. These grants could provide funding to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations to help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading. Grant funding of up to $4,000 is provided.Read more…

The Ruddie Memorial Youth Foundation aims to help underprivileged youth reach their full potential by awarding grants of $25,000 to untested youth programs run by 501(c)(3) organizations that lead to breakthrough results in supporting underprivileged youth. Target is currently accepting applications for their Early Childhood Reading Grants and will provide $2,000 for programs that foster a love of reading and encourage young children, preschool through third grade, to read together with their families. Reading grants support programs such as library storytimes and family reading nights. Programs must take place between September 2014 and August 2015. The deadline is April 30, 2014.Read more…
