  • The National Journal ran a great article on the work of urban schools in Des Moines, Iowa, where students have made gains in test scores and graduation rates, including reading and math score gains for African-American students in grades three through five. With students speaking over 100 different languages and dialects and poverty rates increasing, the schools have invested in teacher training and ELL programming to keep abreast of demographic shifts.
