Star City Reads

Roanoke, VA has been making progress behind the scenes of their Star City Reads campaign, collaborating with funders, hiring support staff, and taking part in cross-community networking efforts. MedExpress, a regional medical group, will be funding a large MedExpress Star City Reads Kidz Day on September 7th. This event will feature family activities, food, and over 30 vendors that support local children. All proceeds will go to books for the campaign. Additionally, they have just hired a full time library assistant, Annie Mountcastle, a Roanoke native with experience coordinating creative writing activities and designing & running an after-school program for K-5 students at a library in West Virginia. Representatives from Star City Reads also attended the Grade-Level Reading Mid-Atlantic Convening in Alexandria, VA, where they shared ideas and resources with colleagues.

Star City Reads has also been encouraging their local community to get involved. Citizens can sign up to be a "Star City Reader" on their website. Roanoke's libraries also feature a summer reading program, Dig Into Reading, running from June 17th to July 27th. Participants explore a different section of the Dewey Decimal System each week. Activities are scheduled at every library in the Roanoke system and in the Roanoke City Schools, ensuring that the whole community has a chance to participate. The Library and the Roanoke City Schools also held a joint Summer Reading Camp which registered 2,600 children. Overall, the Library's summer reading efforts reached over 10,000 participants.

  • Interesting involvement by the regional medical group (MedExpress) and curious to learn more about the Summer Reading Camp and how the Star City Reader sign up online went. Thanks for sharing.
