Happy Thanksgiving! As we move into the final weeks of 2013 and begin thinking about 2014, please mark your calendars and get ready to read with the Cat in the Hat on Monday, March 3, 2014. Read Across America Day will be our first network-wide mobilization opportunity of the new year and we’re already gearing up for an exciting event.
Here are a few updates for the past week and a half from the Network Communities Support Center:
We received five more Tell Our Story submissions: Lane County, OR, Wallowa County, OR, Bellevue, WA, Paterson, NJ and Portland, ME. These stories highlight some particularly promising approaches to expanding summer learning opportunities. Several of the communities reported significant increases in the number of children participating in summer reading and enrichment programs this year.
Three new reports from the Summer Matters campaign in California discuss the role of summer learning programs in preparing staff and students for implementing Common Core, supporting student social and emotional development, and training teachers and staff.
The Springfield, MA Republican published a great story on that community’s grade-level reading initiative. The Irene E. and George A. Davis Foundation, a Springfield-based foundation focusing on early childhood and education, has a goal of ensuring that 80 percent of Springfield’s third graders are reading proficiently by 2016. Today, only half as many third graders are proficient readers. Read more.
The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, is accepting grant applications from nonprofit organizations to develop reading programs, based on provided themes, between September 2014 and June 2015. The deadline for application is January 28, 2014.
If you would like to join the December training cohort for the Results Scorecard pilot, please complete the "Expression of Interest” survey by Friday, December 6. There is no need to fill out this form if you have already submitted an "Expression of Interest." Please email Bob Saffold (email@example.com) to confirm your intention to join the December training cohort.
